wind down

2018.11.07

Meaning:

Have you ever seen a wind-up toy? It’s a toy with a key in its back. You turn the key several times and it creates tension, and makes the toy move. When the key winds down, the toys tension goes and it stops working. So we use the expression ‘wind down’ to mean ‘relax’. For example, ‘After work, I like to wind down with a glass of red wine’.

NOTE: the pronunciation of ‘wind’ here is ‘WINED’ *not* ‘WINNED’.

Example:

My God, what a day! Do you want to get a drink with me?
B: Thanks, but no. I need to go home and wind down. Just have a bath and stare into space.
A: Maybe you have the right idea. I might do a Netflix and pizza night at home.

Talking Point(s):

How do you wind down after work?
