We’ll / Let’s cross that bridge when we come to it

2018.12.26

Meaning:

‘We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it’ means, ‘we’ll solve that problem later’. Imagine you worry about a problem in your future, such as, crossing a dangerous old bridge. According to this saying, you shouldn’t worry about the dangerous bridge before you reach it. You should just keep moving forward and believe that you will find a way to cross the bridge (solve the problem) later. This is a positive, confident expression.

Example:

A: I’m worried that people will spill wine on the carpet at our staff party…
B: Well, let’s cross that bridge when we come to it. We haven’t even invited anyone yet. Let’s see if people want to come to the party first and then we can worry about the carpet.

Talking Point(s):

For you, is it difficult to know when you should plan in detail and when you should say, We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it?
