to bail (on)

2017.10.04

Meaning:

Have you ever wanted to leave a boring social gathering early? That’s one use of the slang bail—to suddenly leave a party or other social situation before it ends. Another slang usage means to fail to meet up with someone, as in canceling plans you made at the last minute. The origin of both expressions is related to leaving a vehicle or transportation device (airplane, surfboard, skateboard, etc.) before it crashes.

Example:

A: Man, this party kind of sucks…
B: I know. I’m about to fall asleep.
A: Alright, let’s bail. We can get beers on the way home and have our own party.
---
A: How was your date with that cutie?
B: Oh, her? She bailed on me at the last minute. She said she wasn’t feeling well.

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever bailed from a party? Why?
