swoon

2017.08.29

Meaning:

Have you ever felt so much love for someone or something that you almost fell over? That is swooning. ‘To swoon’ means ‘to suddenly go weak because of love (or a love-like feeling)’. In the 1960s, teenage girls swooned at Beatles concerts. We use ‘swoon over’ to talk directly about the object of our swooning – eg The girls swooned over the Beatles. ‘Swoon’ is also a sound that expresses this feeling – eg ‘Oh look – he just gave her flowers’ ‘Swoon! What a man!’.

Example:

A: So… John finally asked me on a date.
B: Swoon! John is beautiful!!!
A: And… he told me he loves me. He says he’s always loved me. I gave him a seashell on the first day we met. He kept it in his wallet for 4 years!
B: Oh my God – swoon again!
A: Ok – he’s my boyfriend now. You have to stop swooning over him!

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever swooned? Are there any people in the world that make you swoon?
