on a roll
2018.06.13
Meaning:
‘On a roll’ means ‘to win (or succeed) many times’. For example, if I’m playing darts and I throw 3 bull’s eyes in a row, my friend can say, ‘Wow! You’re on a roll!’ Imagine a ball rolling along a street – when something starts rolling it keeps going. So the expression ‘on a roll’ is based on the idea of continuing – continuing to win.
Example:
A: Hey congratulations! I heard you got a big new client!
B: Thanks, yeah, it’s great.
A: And you won Employee of the Month, too. You’re on a roll!
Talking Point(s):
Can you think of the Japanese translation for ‘on a roll’?
