He’s lost his marbles

2016.10.05

Meaning:

Marbles are glass balls. Children play games with them and collect them. The idiom ‘to lose your marbles’ means ‘to go crazy’. No-one really knows where this expression comes from, but maybe it is because children can become very angry (and seem crazy) when they lose their toys (including marbles).

Example:

A: Where are my glasses? I can’t find my glasses!!!
B: Calm down. They’re on your head.
A: Oh, gosh. Yes, they are. I’m losing my marbles! Sorry about my stupid panic.

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever worried that you were losing your marbles?
