gastro-pub
2018.06.06
Meaning:
If you want to drink alcohol, you go to a pub. Traditionally, in England and English-speaking countries, pubs focus on food and socialising – not food. So in such countries pub food is not often delicious; it’s just fuel to help you keep drinking! However, recently many pubs in such countries have started focusing on delicious food, such as gourmet hamburgers. These pubs are called gastro-pubs. ‘Gastro-‘ means stomach. Japanese izakayas have been serving delicious food for a long time; maybe gastro-pubs were inspired by Japan? Anyway, I saw that on the tv show, ‘Terrace House’, the word ‘izakaya’ was translated as ‘gastro-pub’ in the sub-titles.
Example:
A: Did you see that a new gastro-pub opened up down the road?
B: Oh? Let’s go there for a pub-lunch this Sunday.
Talking Point(s):
Have you ever been to a British-style gastro-pub?
