Barking up the wrong tree

Meaning:
“Barking up the wrong tree" means to pursue a mistaken or misguided course of action or to direct attention or effort in the wrong place or towards the wrong person.
“Barking up the wrong tree"とは、間違った、見当違いなことを間違ったことや人に対して追求すること。
★狩りで獲物を木の上に追い込んだ猟犬が、その木に向かって吠えているけれど（bark 吠える）、実は違う木だったり、獲物はいなくなっていたり・・・。
といったところから来ているようです。
Example:
A: I heard you've been asking around about the missing keys.
B: Yeah, I thought John took them, but it turns out I was barking up the wrong tree. He had nothing to do with it.
A: 無くした鍵の事聞きまくっているって聞いたよ～
B: そうなの。Johnが取ったと思っていたのだけど、蓋をあけてみたら、まったくの見当違いだったわ。彼はなにも関与してなかったの。
