For Crying Out Loud! (expression)

2016.05.24

Meaning:

‘For Crying Out Loud’ means ‘Oh My God!’. It is an expression to show you are a) angry or b) surprised. If you use this to show anger, your voice should go down, and your face should be angry. If you use this to show surprise, your voice (and your eyebrows) should go up. This expression comes from (and has the same meaning as) ‘For Christ’s Sake’. But some people think saying ‘Christ’ is disrespectful. So a long time ago some people started saying ‘Oh for Chri…oops!...for crying out loud‘ instead.

Example:

A: Please wait another minute! I can’t find my keys!
B: Oh, for crying out loud! You’ve lost your keys 4 times in 1 week!

Talking Point(s):

Can you think of any Japanese expressions that changes its meaning depending on how you pronounce it?
