The thing is…

2018.04.18

Meaning:

‘thing’ is a basic, common word, but it has many, many uses. One of the most useful ways to use ‘thing’ is to mean ‘problem’. If we say ‘the thing is…’, it means ‘the problem is…’. We often use it to express something very important. For example, ‘You broke my heart. But the thing is… I still love you’.

Example:

A: Do you want to come to Thailand with me next month?
B: Ummm… the thing is… I don’t have any money.

A: I can’t sing that song.
B: Why not? You sang it at your wedding. You sing it well!
A: The thing is… my husband is leaving me. That song makes me cry now.

Talking Point(s):

Do you have any important problems that you’d like to talk about? What sentence would you like to start with ‘The thing is…’?
