take the plunge

2017.12.13

Meaning:

‘Plunge’ means ‘dive powerfully’. If I plunge into water, I dive powerfully into water. If I plunge into my work, I start doing my work with a lot of energy. So the expression ‘take the plunge’ means ‘dive powerfully into an un-known situation’ – or, more simply, ‘be brave – try something new’. For example, imagine I want to date a man, but I am scared he doesn’t want to date me. My friend might say, ‘Go on! Take the plunge! Ask him on a date!’

Example:

A: I’m so excited! I wrote a story and it is being published!
B: That’s great! Are you going to take the plunge and quit your job?
A: I don’t know. I think I’ll wait until I sell some more stories. I don’t want to plunge into a new career before I’m ready.

Talking Point(s):

Can you think of times in your life when you had to take the plunge?
