Sweep it under the rug

2019.10.23

Meaning:

To sweep something under the rug means to hide something that you don’t want to talk about or to avoid dealing with something. It is usually something embarrassing or something that could hurt a person’s reputation. Sweeping something under the rug / carpet doesn’t really clean the room, it only temporarily hides the dirt.

Example:

A: I saw Andy’s girlfriend with another guy last week but I don’t think I am brave enough to tell him.
B: You shouldn’t sweep this under the rug. How do you think he will feel when he finds out that you knew but didn’t tell him?

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever swept anything under the rug?
