smug

2017.11.08

Meaning:

A smug person is a person who is very, very pleased with him/herself. ‘Smug’ has a slightly negative nuance. It is similar to ‘arrogant’, but it includes a nuance of happiness. Arrogant and smug people both think they are better than everyone else, but smug people are *happy* because of this belief.

Example:

A: What’s up? Why do you have that smug smile on your face?
B: I just made $20,000 on the stockmarket. Let’s book a holiday!

A: Ugh. Jason in the Sales Department is so annoying! He’s so good-looking and smart and… ugh.
B: Sounds like you like him!
A: No way. He’s so smug.

Talking Point(s):

Has anyone ever called you smug?
