schmooze

Meaning:
‘Schmooze’ means ‘talk’, but it includes nuances of a) being friendly, b) being casual & c) *not* being sincere/ genuine. So it has a negative nuance. If you don’t really like someone, but you talk in a really friendly way with them so you can use them – then you are schmoozing. Politicians schmooze. Salespeople schmooze. We have all probably schmoozed at some time! Schmoozing means networking – but networking sounds good. Schmoozing sounds bad.
Example:
A: Look at Susan schmoozing with the boss! She’s laughing at all his stupid jokes. I know she doesn’t like him. She’s just trying to get a promotion.
B: So? She’s being nice to him. And if she gets a promotion, good for her. She has good social skills. You should try being friendly with the boss too.
A: Ugh. I hate people schmoozing like that. Why can’t we just get promotions when we do good work?
Talking Point(s):
Do you hate schmoozers? Are you good at schmoozing?
