quirky

2017.11.15

Meaning:

‘Quirky’ means ‘strange’, but it has a much more positive nuance. A quirky person is a cute and/or interesting strange person. The noun ‘quirk’ means ‘unusual habit’ or ‘unusual part of someone’. For example, my friend has a quirk – she cannot relax at night until she has turned her light-switch on and off 5 times. Examples of famous quirky characters include Columbo (the tv-detective), Amelie (from the French movie), Daffy Duck and Goofy (but not Mickey Mouse).

Example:

A: I don’t want to go on a date with Simon. He’s too strange.
B: Really? I like him. I mean, he’s quirky. I like quirky men. I think they’re cute. And we all have quirks, don’t we?
A: What are your quirks?
B: I don’t know. I can’t see them myself. Or maybe I’m boring and have no quirks. Maybe that’s why I like quirky men!

Talking Point(s):

Are you quirky? What are your quirks?
