Keep (someone) in the dark

2019.10.16

Meaning:

To keep someone in the dark means to not give someone information about something. It is like keeping a secret from them. Imagine you put that person in a completely dark room. They wouldn’t see anything so they wouldn’t know what was in the room. For example, imagine your company decided to transfer you to Osaka in February. They might tell you tomorrow. Or they might keep you in the dark about it until December.

Example:

A: I’m really looking forward to Kenny’s surprise birthday party this weekend.
B: Me too. Everybody has done a great job of keeping him in the dark. He has no idea we are throwing a party for him!

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever been kept in the dark?
