It’s the thought that counts

2017.12.20

Meaning:

It’s Christmas time! At this time of year many people in the West (& some people in Japan!) give gifts. Have you ever given a poor gift to someone just because you didn’t have enough money? For example, imagine you went shopping with a friend. You tell your friend, ‘I want to buy my English teacher a great gift, but I only have 300yen in my wallet.’ Your friend could say, ‘Don’t worry. It’s the thought that counts. Your teacher will like anything you get him.’ ‘It’s the thought that counts’ means ‘Thinking about someone (and showing that thought) is more important than an expensive gift.’

Example:

A: I really want to give my mother a nice present for Christmas. But I don’t have any money!
B: Don’t worry. It’s the thought that counts. I’m sure your mother will love anything that you give her.

Talking Point(s):

Do you think it is the thought that counts? Or do you think a good present is important?
