I feel left out

2019.10.02

Meaning:

‘I was left out’ means ‘The group didn’t include me’. For example, imagine your co-workers all went out to dinner and didn’t invite you. You could say, ‘They left me out’ or ‘I was left out’. Think of ‘left out’ as the past of ‘leave out’. So ‘leave her out’ means ‘put her out of the group’. ‘I *feel* left out’ means ‘I’m sad because I *feel* like the group doesn’t include me’. For example, imagine your co-workers all like talking about sports and imagine you don’t like sports. Maybe your co-workers are not trying to leave you out when they chat about sports, but you would still feel left out.

Example:

A: Hey, what’s wrong with Mike? He seems a little sad.
B: Maybe he’s feeling left out. He’s still pretty new here, and he’s shy. Should we ask him to get a coffee?

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever felt left out?
