Meaning:
"burying one's head in the sand" means trying to hide from the truth. rather than see the uncomfortable reality, it is easier to put your head in the sand and pretend everything is okay.
「head in the sand」は「burying one's head in the sand」のセットフレーズで良く使って、「現実を回避する」の意味となります。頭を砂に埋めてしまったら、何も見えないし聞えない状況になってるので、平気なふりをします。
