Crow’s feet
2017.06.28
Meaning:
‘Crow’s feet’ is a common English expression that means ‘lines from the outer corner of our eyes’. Crow’s feet are caused by age, the sun and laughing. The expression has a negative nuance – but it’s easy to remember because eye-lines do look like the foot of a bird (a crow is a kind of bird). Another (nicer!) expression for crow’s feet is ‘laughter lines’.
Example:
(2 men talking)
A: Long time no see, Tarou! Getting old, huh? Look at those crow’s feet!
B: Get lost, Jim. You’d have crow’s feet too if you weren’t so fat.
A: Ah, it’s good to see you again, buddy.
(2 women talking)
A: I’m so sad, Kumiko! I can’t lose these crow’s feet.
B: Well, I think you look great, and anyway – crow’s feet are a sign of a happy, well-lived life so don’t feel sad about them. They’re laughter lines!
Talking Point(s):
Do you have crow’s feet? Do you wish you didn’t???
