comfort zone

2017.12.27

Meaning:

A ‘comfort zone’ is a situation where you feel comfortable or relaxed. For example, when I lived in Australia I was in my comfort zone (it is my home; I understand how to behave). Living in Japan has pushed me out of my comfort zone (I have to learn new ways to behave, speak… even eat). When we are out of our comfort zone, we feel stressed. And too much stress is dangerous. However, a little stress can be good. Experts say that even rats learn more & faster when they are pushed outside their comfort zone. So – if you want to learn more & achieve more, push yourself just outside your comfort zone. Take a small risk!

Example:

A: Why are you going to Joe’s party? You hate parties, don’t you?
B: Yes. I’m pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I want to get better at starting conversations with new people.

Talking Point(s):

Do you want to push yourself out of your comfort zone in 2018?
