Come Back to Haunt Me

2017.10.25

Meaning:

This idiom can be used to show regret about a mistake you (or someone else) made in the past. It means that the decision you made will cause problems in the future for you—either something bad will happen, or you will continue to worry about your past mistake. A person or place that is visited by ghosts is said to be ‘haunted’, so you can imagine your regret following you like a ghost.

Example:

A: Well, I didn’t get the job. Apparently, the interviewer checked my Facebook and said there were too many party pictures.
B: Like I always say, what you post on social media might come back to haunt you.

Talking Point(s):

Has your past ever come back to haunt you?
