chip in
2018.02.07
Meaning:
‘chip in’ means ‘give some money so that a group of people can buy something together’. For example, if my family members all chipped in, maybe we could buy a holiday home in Karuizawa! The word ‘chip’ means ‘a small part of something bigger’ (for example, a potato chip is a small part of a potato). So chipping in suggests that we only need to give a small amount of money so that the group can buy something large.
Example:
A: So, we’re going to buy a fitbit for John for his farewell gift. Would you like to chip in?
B: Sure. How much?
A: 10 dollars is enough. The boss is chipping in $100, so $10 from everyone else is fine.
Talking Point(s):
Have you ever chipped in for someone’s present?
