Meaning:
The original meaning of ‘chill’ is ‘to make cold’. For example, ‘The wine is chilling in an ice bucket’. But in modern English young people use ‘chill’ to mean ‘relax’ and also ‘relaxed’. For example, ‘Chill, John!’ means, ‘Relax, John!’. ‘John is a chill guy’ means ‘John is a cool and relaxed guy’. The adjective ‘chill’ has a positive nuance. A chill person is stoic – ie they never get scared, angry or sad – they accept drama and danger in a very relaxed way. ‘Chill’ is mainly used by people under 30.
Example:
A: What are you doing?
B: I’m just chillin’.
A: You?! I don’t believe you – you’re not a chill guy. You’re hiding something!
B: Agh! Look! Ok – here it is. I was hiding your birthday present.
A: Oh. I’m so sorry. I guess *I* need to chill.
Talking Point(s):
Are you chill? Who do you like to chill with?
