“A penny for your thoughts" is a way of asking someone what they are thinking or feeling, often when they appear lost in thought.
“A penny for your thoughts"とは、相手が物思いにふけっているときに、何を考えているのか、何を感じているのかを尋ねる言い方です。
★こちらの言い回しは1500年代に使われ始めた表現といわれ、その時代1ペニーは大変価値があったそうです。1ペニー払ってでもあなたの考えが知りたい。と昔の人が会話の輪に入っていない人に尋ねたそうです。
