Meaning:
If we say ‘He has a lot on his plate’, we don’t usually mean food. We mean ‘He is very busy; he has a lot of things to do.’ You can have a lot on your plate or too much on your plate. But we never say not enough on your plate. This expression is always about being busy.
Example:
A: Do you want to go for a drink?
B: I’m sorry, I can’t. I’ve got too much on my plate right now. Can we do something next week?
A: Is John angry at me? He keeps refusing when I ask him out.
B: He’s just got a lot on his plate now. Did you know his wife is sick? And his work is really tough.
