"Throw a spanner in the works"とは、計画や企画の進行を妨げたり複雑にすることを意味します。
★ちなみにこちらはイギリスでよく使われる表現。アメリカだとspannerの部分がwrenchという単語に変わるそうです。ここにもイギリス英語とアメリカ英語の違いがあるとはおもしろいですね。
Example:
A: We were all set to go on our road trip when the car broke down.
B: Well, that throws a spanner in the works. Now we need to figure out how to get the car fixed before we can hit the road.
A: 旅行にいく準備ができていたのに車が壊れちゃったよ。
B: 台無しになっちゃったね。出かける前に車を修理する方法を見つけ出さないと。
