"The elephant in the room" means a big, obvious problem or issue that everyone knows about but avoids talking about.
“The elephant in the room”はみんなが認識しているけど、あえて触れることを避けている重大な話題や問題のことを指します。
★直訳をすると「部屋の中の象」となり、象を大きな問題と見立てています。部屋の中に象のような巨大なものがいて明らかに誰の目にも入っている状況なのに、その事をあえて話題にしない、見て見ぬふりをするという意味になるということですね。
