stand up for yourself

2018.08.01

Meaning:

‘to stand up for someone’ means to defend someone. For example, if John says ‘Susan is stupid’, he is attacking Susan. If I reply, ‘Susan is not stupid. Don’t say that,’ I am standing up for Susan. If you stand up for yourself, you are defending yourself. For example, I can stand up for myself by telling my boss I won’t work overtime.

Example:

A: Some boys are bullying my son. They won’t play with him, and they take his lunch. It’s because he’s at a new school.
B: Oh no! What are you doing?
A: Well, I want him to stand up for himself. So I’m teaching him some things to say to the boys. But he needs more friends. He needs some other kids to stand up for him, too, I think.

Talking Point(s):

Are you good at standing up for yourself? When was the last time you stood up for yourself?
