rough patch

2017.08.23

Meaning:

‘I’m going through a rough patch’ means ‘I’m in the middle of a difficult situation, but I expect the situation to get better in the future’. Think of driving a car. If the road is rough, it is difficult to drive. But eventually we get to the end of a rough road and driving gets easier. So although a ‘rough patch’ is a difficult time, it also suggests hope for the future.

Example:

A:
B: What’s wrong? Why are you crying?
A: Don’t worry about me. I’m just going through a bit of a rough patch. I’ll be ok soon.
B: What happened? Did you have another fight with your mother?
A: Yes, but don’t worry. We’ll be ok. It’s just a rough patch.

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever been through a rough patch? How did you get through it?
