Pull It Off (idiom)

2017.01.12

Meaning:

‘Pull it off’ is an expression we can use when talking about fashion. Iit means 'to look good in something that would usually *not* look good'. For example, in the 1950s (as now?) very short hair on women was considered unfeminine. But most people felt that Audrey Hepburn was so beautiful that she pulled it off.

Example:

A: Did you see the Golden Globes awards? Emma Stone looked great in that pale pink dress. I can’t pull off that colour, but it suits her.
B: Yes, but I prefer it when people take risks with fashion. Did you see Olivia Culpo’s dress?
B: I don’t know who she is!
A: Here - this is a photo. It’s a risky choice of a dress, but I think she pulls it off, don’t you?

Talking Point(s):

Do you think Olivia Culpo pulled off this dress?
