go viral
2017.09.28
Meaning:
‘go viral’ means ‘become very very very popular (very quickly)’. We use this mainly for blogs or videos or photos etc on the internet – because the internet can make things become super-popular super-fast. For example, Justin Bieber helped the song ‘Pen Pineapple Apple Pen’ go viral by tweeting it. ‘viral’ is the adjective of ‘virus’, and a virus is a disease that can spread very fast. However, ‘go viral’ doesn’t have a negative nuance. Marketers want their websites/ videos etc to go viral.
Example:
A: Did you see the photos of the hero groom?
B: Hero groom? What do you mean?
A: A groom is a man getting married. So in London a man was getting married and he saw a boy fall in a river. He jumped in and rescued the boy.
B: Did he jump in the river in his wedding suit?
A: Yes. The photos went viral.
Talking Point(s):
