Flex on (someone)

2019.08.23

Meaning:

Do you know the expression ‘show off’? To ‘show off’ means to try to get attention by showing how rich or clever or powerful etc you are. It’s a negative expression. For example, ‘Yuk! Look at that guy showing off with his expensive sports car’ or ‘Agh! I can’t understand all the big words you’re using. I know you’re clever, but stop showing off!’
‘Flex on’ is a new slang expression in English that means ‘show off’. Flex comes from flexing your muscles - to show someone how strong you are. Some hip-hop songs used this expression and made it popular. It’s not a very common expression (yet), and is used mainly by young people.

Example:

A: Look at you, with those expensive new AirPods. Are you trying to flex on everyone at work?
B: No, no, it’s not like that! I just hate earphone cords.

Talking Point(s):

Talking Point(s): Has anyone tried to flex on you recently?
