call it a day (expression)

2017.03.01

Meaning:

‘call it a day’ means ‘finish today’s work’. We use it when we decide to stop working and go home. So, for example, if you are the boss and you want your staff to stop working, you can say ‘Let’s call it a day’, and everyone will feel free to stop working and go home. If you want to go home yourself, you can say ‘Ok, guys, I’m going to call it a day. I’ll see you tomorrow.’

Example:

Example1
A: Ok, I’ve finished most of my work, and I can’t think clearly if I sit here anymore! I’m going to call it a day.
B: Sure. Have a good night!
A: You too. Don’t work too hard.
B: Don’t worry – I’m going soon.

Example2
A: Ok, good work everyone. Let’s call it a day.
B: Great! Does anyone want to go and get a drink?

Talking Point(s):

Do you work? If so, what would happen if you said ‘I’m going to call it a day’ and left work at 5pm tomorrow?
