Meaning:
When we make mistakes, we often try to give the reason *why*. That reason is ‘an excuse’. For example if I’m late and I say ‘My car broke down’, that’s an excuse. The word ‘lame’ is an old English word meaning ‘cannot walk well’ (eg having a broken leg). In modern English, we say lame excuse to mean ‘an excuse that is not good enough’. For example, ‘I’m sorry I’m late. I got drunk last night.’… this is a very lame excuse!
Example:
A: Sorry, I didn’t do my homework. I’ve been busy with work. I know that’s a lame excuse, and I am sorry. I’m just so tired!
B: Don’t worry so much. Of course you should do your homework, but sleep is more important. Try to do it next week. Maybe you can do it on the train?
