with guns blazing

2020.07.16

Meaning:

To do something ‘with guns blazing’ means ‘to do something aggressively - with strong energy and purpose’. We often use it to talk about competitive things – such as sports or business. For example, ‘That team played badly in the first half, but in the second half they came back with guns blazing and won the game!’ This expression can be used both positively and negatively.

Example:

A: Wow. You really went at the poor guy with guns blazing! He cried!
B: Oh. Was I too aggressive?
A: Yes! You scared him!

A: Wow! You really went at that rude guy with guns blazing!
B: Oh. Was I too aggressive?
A: You were great! He won’t be rude to you again!

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever entered a business meeting with guns blazing?
