Meaning:
A ‘whirlwind romance’ is a passionate, exciting, *fast* romance. We don’t usually say ‘whirlwind’ except when we say ‘whirlwind romance’; but we can understand ‘whirl’ to mean ‘spin around’. So a whirlwind is like a typhoon or tornado. A ‘whirlwind romance’ doesn’t have the negative nuance of typhoon, though. It just sounds very fast and romantic.
Example:
A: Sigh! I’m so jealous. My friend Machiko went on holiday to Sweden, met a man, fell crazily in love… and two months later – they’re getting married!
B: Huh. Well, I give it another two months before the divorce…
A: Oh, don’t be like that. It’s exciting – a whirlwind romance!
B: Sorry – I don’t believe in whirlwind romances.
