too much time on your hands
2018.12.06
Meaning:
Do you have a lot of free time? If yes, maybe you’re lucky – you feel relaxed. But some people feel they have *too* much free time, and they feel bored. We can say those people have too much time on their hands. We often use this expression when we think someone has a silly hobby – for example, ‘I spent yesterday making a toy plane from egg cartons and rubber bands. I think I have too much time on my hands.’
Example:
A: So, what did you do yesterday?
B: Well, I cleaned the house.
A: That’s good. You did a big clean, hey?
B: I even organised all my herbs and spices so they’re in alphabetical order.
A: Wow… I think you may have too much time on your hands, my friend.
Talking Point(s):
Have you ever had too much time on your hands? What did you do to entertain yourself?
