to spell it out
2016.04.06
Meaning:
To spell something out means ‘to explain something very, very clearly’. We often use it as part of the expression, ‘Let me spell it out for you’ or ‘Do I have to spell it out for you?’. In those cases, it can sound a little bit threatening. For example, ‘Do I have to spell it out for you? When I say ‘please come to work earlier’, I mean ‘You must come to work earlier or I will fire you!’
Example:
A: I don’t want to go to the party.
B: You have to come to the party.
A: But I’m tired.
B: Let me spell it out for you. If you don’t come to the party, I will never talk to you again.
