Meaning:
A ‘thump’ is a sound effect. It is the sound of a heavy hit. For example, if someone strong hits me hard, the sound would be ‘thump’. To English speakers, ‘th’ sounds are like the air and ‘p’ and ‘d’ sounds are hard, shocking sounds. So sounds like ‘thump’ and ‘thud’ sound like a hit. These words can also describe knocking on a door or a heartbeat, eg ‘I got excited and my heart went thud thud thud.’ We can also use ‘thump’ as a verb or a noun. For example, ‘I was angry at him so I thumped him.’ or ‘I was angry at him so I gave him a thump.’ We do not use ‘thud’ as a verb or a noun.
Example:
A: Can you hear that? There’s a noise outside: thump, thump. What is that?
B: I think someone’s knocking on the door… But it’s so loud!
A: Oh, I see. It’s that cheeky boy from the next apartment. If he doesn’t stop thumping on the door soon, I’m going to thump him!
