the tip of the iceberg

2020.07.30

Meaning:

‘It’s just the tip of the iceberg’ means ‘There is a big problem. You can only see a small part of the problem. But trust me – the problem is *much* bigger.’ For example, one scientist (Shi Zhengli) said that Coronavirus is just the tip of the iceberg. She thinks that we are going to have even worse disease outbreaks if we don’t make more effort to research animal viruses.

Example:

A: Your sister’s new boyfriend is a bit ‘spacey’, hey? He forgets everything I say to him.
B: Yeah, I worry that forgetting stuff is just the tip of the iceberg. I hope he’s not a drug-taker…

Talking Point(s):

Do you think Shi Zhengli is right? Is coronavirus just the tip of the iceberg? Should we put more effort into researching other viruses?
