Sleep on it

2018.11.28

Meaning:

This means ‘take time before making this decision’. Sleep first and then decide tomorrow – after you have thought about it calmly. We use this expression to give advice. For example, if a friend is not sure whether to buy a new car, we can say, ‘Don’t decide now. Sleep on it.’ We also use this expression to give advice to ourselves. For example, ‘I’m not sure whether to buy this car. I’ll sleep on it and decide tomorrow.’

Example:

A: So, do you want to take the new job?
B: Oh, I don’t know! It’s a great job, but I don’t want to leave my current job…
A: Well, you don’t have to decide now. Sleep on it.
B: Thanks. It’s a big decision. I don’t want to make a mistake.

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever needed to sleep on a big decision? What was it?
