Meaning:
The word ‘rich’ has many meanings. As you know, the base meaning is ‘to have a lot of money’. But we also use ‘rich’ to describe taste. It means the taste is complex and deep; for example, a good stew. The Japanese translation is 濃厚な味. A third use for ‘rich’ is in the expression, ‘That’s rich (coming from you)!’ This expression means ‘Unbelievable! You just said something bad about me, but actually *you* have that bad point yourself!’ For example, if my husband said, ‘You’re so lazy!’, I could say, ‘Ha! That’s rich! You’ve been on the sofa all day!’
Example:
A: You’re late! I can’t believe you’re so late!
B: That’s rich! You’re *always* late! I was just late because I didn’t want to get here before you.
A: Mmm. This chocolate cake is so nice and rich.
B: Yeah, it’s a bit too rich for me. I can’t finish it. Do you want mine?
Talking Point(s):
