My Way or the Highway

2019.11.06

Meaning:

My way or the highway means ‘do what I say… or leave’. ‘Highway’ is a kind of road, so in this expression ‘the highway’ is a way to say ‘go away’ or ‘leave’. For example, imagine a teacher with very strict rules. That teacher might say, ‘You cannot speak in class. If you speak, you have to leave my classroom. You could say, ‘I don’t like my teacher. He’s a my way or the highway kind of guy. This expression has a negative nuance.

Example:

A: Can we get a cat, Mum? Please?
B: Look, I’m sorry. I don’t want to be all ‘my way or the highway’, but I really can’t live with a cat in the house.

Talking Point(s):

Do you know any my way or the highway types of people?
