Mansplain

2016.07.05

Meaning:

‘Mansplain’ = ‘man’ + ‘explain’. It means ‘(a man) to explain something to a woman when it is not necessary’. Mansplaining has a negative nuance of over-confidence.
Some people dislike this word because they think it is unfair to men. However, many other people must like this word because it has become so popular so quickly. It was on the New York Times ‘Word of the Year’ list in 2010.

Example:

A: Agh! Tony keeps mansplaining things to me and it is so annoying!
B: What do you mean? Like… what does he say?
A: Well, I’m pretty good at playing golf…
B: I know – you’ve won amateur golf tournaments, right?
A: Yes. Tony saw me reading a book about golf and mansplained the secret of a good golf swing to me… He didn’t even ask if I’d ever played golf before…
