malarkey
2020.11.18
Meaning:
Malarkey is an old-fashioned word that is not often used today – except by Joe Biden! Malarkey means ‘nonsense’. Other (more common) ways to say malarkey are: rubbish, garbage and bullshit. Note: bullshit is a swear word, so if you want to sound polite, don’t use it. When Biden speaks, he often says, ‘Malarkey!’ to show disagreement. His campaign was even called the ‘No Malarkey’ (ie ‘No nonsense’) campaign. Some people felt this name highlighted his age, because many young people don’t even know the meaning of the word.
Example:
A: Ugh! I look so fat!
B: Malarkey! You look great.
A: Thanks, Grandad. You’re very sweet!
Talking Point(s):
Can you think of Japanese words that are good translations for ‘malarkey’ or ‘nonsense’?
