Hump Day

2019.05.22

Meaning:

A hump is something difficult to climb over. For example, camels have humps on their backs. We sometimes say ‘I’m getting over the hump’ to mean ‘I’m finishing the difficult part of the task’. So, in the US, ‘Hump Day’ is Wednesday. This is because the normal work week is Monday to Friday. On Wednesday we are usually finishing most of our week’s work (getting over the hump). So Hump Day is a happy expression.

Example:

A: Uh. I’m so tired.
B: Well, it is Wednesday: right in the middle of the working week.
A: You’re right – Hump Day! Hey – the bar next door is having a half-price Hump Day promotion. Shall we get a drink after work?
B: I think a drink would be a great thing to get us over the hump.

Talking Point(s):

Do bars in Japan have Hump Day promotions?
