He/She rubs me the wrong way
2019.06.13
Meaning:
‘to rub someone the wrong way’ means ‘to irritate someone’ (イライラする). Imagine I touch your hair. If I touch it the ‘right’ way, then your hair will lie flat, and you will feel comfortable and loved! If I rub it the ‘wrong’ way, then your hair will stand up, and you will feel irritated. So if I say ‘He rubs me the wrong way’, it means ‘He irritates me’.
Example:
A: Ugh. I really don’t like that guy…
B: Why not?
A: He just rubs me the wrong way. He looks like he’s laughing at me.
A: You are really rubbing me the wrong way today! Please just leave me alone.
B: Sorry, sorry! Ok, you’re in a bad mood. I’ll go away.
Talking Point(s):
What do you do when someone rubs you the wrong way?
