Has a nice ring to it
2019.07.03
Meaning:
When something ‘has a nice ring to it,’ it simply means that it ‘sounds good’. In this expression, ‘ring’ comes from the meaning ‘the sound of a bell’. Bells sound nice. So if something ‘has a nice ring to it’ it can sound cool or elegant or cute – but it must be positive. We often (but not only) use this expression for titles (eg Sir, President, CEO) that give us status.
Example:
A: After all these years of study, I’m finally about to graduate.
B: Dr. Richard Kimble. That has a nice ring to it.
A: Right?
A: I thought of a title for my newest song! ‘Love bag!’
B: Hmm… yeah, it has a certain ring to it. But what does it mean?
