Hair of the dog (that bit you)

2019.07.17

Meaning:

‘Hair of the dog’ means ‘alcohol’. Specifically, it means if you drink a lot one night, then you should have *another* drink (‘hair of the dog’) the next day. Think of alcohol as ‘a dog biting you’ (because alcohol gives you a headache etc), and think of drinking a little bit of alcohol the next day to cure your headache as ‘hair of the dog’. A long time ago some English people believed that you could cure a dog bite by using a dog hair… That idea died out a long time ago, but the expression ‘hair of the dog’ remains.

Example:

A: My head hurts so badly! I shouldn’t have drunk so much last night.
B: Here, have some hair of the dog. You’ll feel better.

Talking Point(s):

Have you ever tried to cure a hangover with hair of the dog?
Did it work?
